What is DTF Printing
Share
DTF printing, or Direct to Film printing, is a method used to transfer designs onto various types of fabrics. Here's how it works and why it's become popular:
-
Printing the Design: The design is first printed onto a special type of coated PET film using a modified inkjet printer. The inks used are typically a type of pigment ink or specially formulated DTF inks, which are designed to adhere well to the film and the fabric.
-
Applying Powder Adhesive: After the design is printed onto the film, a powdered adhesive is applied to the wet ink. The adhesive sticks only to the printed areas.
-
Curing: The film is then heated (cured) to dry the ink and melt the adhesive. This process prepares the design for transfer.
-
Transferring to Fabric: The film is then placed onto the fabric, and heat and pressure are applied using a heat press. The heat causes the adhesive to bond the ink to the fabric, and once cooled, the film is peeled away, leaving the design on the fabric.
-
Final Curing: Sometimes, a final press is done to ensure the print is fully set into the fabric.
Advantages of DTF Printing:
- Versatility: It can be used on a variety of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, and blends.
- Color Quality: Produces vibrant, full-color prints with a good level of detail.
- Efficiency: It's suitable for both small and large runs, making it cost-effective for custom orders without the need for setup like in traditional screen printing.
- Ease of Use: Simplifies the printing process, especially when dealing with complex multi-color designs.
DTF printing is particularly popular in the custom apparel industry for creating personalized garments and unique designs.
